Careless Couple

"They were careless people, Tom and Daisy- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made."

Do you agree or disagree that Tom and Daisy should arguable be considered "careless people"? Support your response with evidence from the text. (This response can only be fully answered after reading the entire novel.)

  1. I do agree that Tom and Daisy are to be considered as "careless people" because they only think about themselves and to have power or money among others.
For example, when Gatsby died, Daisy who said she loves Jay, did not even consider on talking to Nick about what happened, and did not attend the funeral. Also, Tom wanted to save himself so he told Wilson who Gatsby was and where he lives. I think that both Daisy and Tom does not care about other people's feelings and only want whats best for their own.

I agree with Hsienchi. Tom and Daisy were both careless people therefore making them a careless people. They did not care about how their decisions affectd other people. Daisy said she loved Gatsby but in the end when he was murdered she did not call, write, or speak to Nick. She acutally went on vacation. In fact she did not even attend Gatsby's funeral, many people did not. Tom did not care what happened to Gatsby as long as his life was not in danger. For example on page 178 he says, "He was crazy enough to kill meif I had not told him who owned that car." He further goes on to say that Gatsbu had it coming to him which also makes Tom a hipocrite because he was well had an affair with a married woman. Tom and Daisy were both careless people which made them a perfect couple. In the end all they care about where their own selfish needs being met.

I agree that they were careless people because they did not consider other people's feelings. They didn't even consider each others feelings when they started the affairs. On the other hand they were careful people because Tom didn't find out about Daisy's affair until Gatsby pretty much confessed, and Daisy didn't know about Toms affair. So they were careless with other other people but when it suited them and their purposes they were very careful not to get caught. I disagree with Michelle because it does not say they went on vacation. Tom obviously pressured and persuaded a more immature and childish Daisy into thinking that leaving is the best thing to do. On page 164 it says they left with bags and left no address but it never says they went on vacation. I believe they left more out of necessity than pleasure. I disagree with Hsienchi when she says that Daisy didn't consider talking to Nick. I think that the reason Tom took Daisy away was to have more control on her. Once they leave we don't hear from Daisy again. If she tried to call Nick whats to say that Tom didn't stop her. He has already proved to be a very controlling overprotective husband in the past. We don't even know if Daisy knows Gatsby is dead or that Tom provoked it by telling Mr. Wilson about Gatsby.

I agree with the Nick's opinion on Daisy and Tom.

For instance, like Alina said, they did not consider anybody else's feelings when they cheated. When Tom cheated on Daisy, he did not care that he made Daisy cry. When Daisy had a fling with Jay she did not care about making Jay or Tom happy Or for that matter even taking care of her daughter.

Furthermore, I agree with Michelle when she said that he did not care about anything, as long as his life was not in danger. When Wilson came by looking for who drove that car, he told that it was Gatsby's because he wanted him gone and did not care what happened to him. He did not even the decency to show up to his funeral in remorse, instead he moved Daisy away.

I agree that Tom and Daisy can arguably be considered "careless people". An example of careless from Tom was on page 14, leaves the table that sat Daisy, his wife, and her cousin Nick to talk to the woman he is having an affair with. In the text Jordan Baker says she "thought everybody knew" that "Tom's got some woman in New York" which shows he was careless toward avoiding peoples notice. Not to mention later on he even takes Nick to visit his mistress. On page 143, it is let known that the one who hit Myrtle Wilson was in fact Daisy. Then on page 164 it was said that Daisy and Tom "had gone away early that afternoon, and taken baggage with them". Just up and moving away was not a carefully thought out decision it is spur of the moment careless. I agree with Michelle Reynolds when she said "They did not care about how their decisions affected other people" because going back to Tom leaving the table, they all knew what he was up to but it was all justified to him so he simply did not care. Even though he knew what Wilson was going to do because it was not him who was in trouble he did not care if Gatsby were going to die, he gave him Gatsby's name, didnt call the police, and did not even show up at the funeral. Alina Hodut makes a good point when she states "They didn't even consider each others feelings when they started the affairs". Tom was enjoying himself with Myrtle and Daisy started to enjoy herself more with Gatsby so they honestly couldnt careless how it affected their spouse. Tom and Daisy truly were "careless people".

I believe Tom and Daisy are "Careless People" they never cared about other peoples feelings all they cared about was themselves and what they had. I agree with Hsienchi, they only want whats best for their own. Like Larry said, Tom just got up and left Daisy and Nick to go talk to the girl he is having an affair with. That shows carelessness.Wanting what is best for yourself and not caring who it affects is a careless action. Not caring for the someone you "loved" shows that Daisy didnt care.

I agree with Michelle, Daisy and Tom are a careless couple. One can concur even after the first chapter. For example, Tom brought Nick into his twisted world. Also, Tom does not worry about hurting Daisy he gladly flaunts his mistress, Myrtle. Another example would be both of them killing the secret partners. Through out the book you can see their mistakes by their actions and when you read through Nick's point of view you can even tell where they went wrong.

  8. I agree with Nick's quote and I think Tom and Daisy should be considered as careless people. Like Amanda said their wealth and their feelings was their only concern. Their relationships for instance was evidence that they cared less. Daisy doesn't think of Tom as she goes off with Gatsby and Tom shows off his affair with Mytrle. This proves that neither of them cares about each other getting hurt.Tom uses his position to get what he want like using Mr. Wilson and his services just to get to Myrtle. When things starts to come to the light they react by saving theirselves instead of being honest.

  9. I agree that Tom and Daisy were a careless couple. First off, Tom had another woman on the side. He would go out with her and speak with her on the phone and people were aware of this. When Daisy and Gatsby got closer, she openly kissed him and said she loved him in front of tom, Nick, and Jordan. She even left with him and killed Myrtle Wilson and Daisy did not take a single blame for it. After Gatsby's death, Daisy and Tom ran off to who knows where without even sending their disregards. Daisy knew that it was her fault for the death of Ms. Wilson and Gatsby suffered because Tom told Mr. Wilson it was Gatsby to save his own life. Not only that but Tom was a very violent man who hit Ms. Wilson and her husband was aware of her injuries, just not what had happened. They were a very impulsive couple who would do the dumbest things away from each other but in the end they always came back together. They're careless, repulsive, and behaved like childs in my opinion.

I would consider Tom and Daisy a very careless couple. Tom is cheating on Daisy with Myrtle and doesn’t even try to hide it. He brings her out for god and everyone to see and not only that but causes a scene by punching Myrtle in the face in public. Further evidence is that Daisy hits Myrtle with Gatsby’s car killing her and leaving George Wilson alone and grieving. To make matters worse when Wilson goes looking for the driver Tom tells Wilson that it was Gatsby’s car so Wilson goes and kills Gatsby. So I would certainly agree that they are careless they cause immense amounts of trouble with their scandals and lies.

  11. I agree with Nick's view that Tom and Daisy are careless people.
First of all, as Nick said, "they smashed up things and creatures..." The way they both cheated on each other shows how careless they are. Not only that but also how they move on with their daily lives living with each other 'married' shows how careless they really are.
Second of all, not only do they not care about each other but they dont even care about the ones they are cheating with. Daisy did not even show up to Gatsby funeral. She practically left him after the death of Myrtle. Should Daisy not be at least a little bit affected by Jay's death? And as Alex said above, Tom treated Myrtle like trash, bringing her to a party then punching her in front of everyone. AS if the only people that matter in this world are themselves.

  12. I agree that tom and daisy are careless people. they dont care about what other people feel except their own feelings and happiness. both of them are very selfish thats why i think they are the perfect match for each other. daisy's act was very rude upon not going to jays death funeral. and also tom is trying to get jay in trouble so he doesnt get the blame for it. he succeded but it was not right.

I do believe that they are careless and selfish because while at the dinner Tom got up went to answer his mitress's phone call while his wife was right there. A while after that Daisy rode to town in the car with Gatsby instaed of her husband and then didnt't even go to Gatsby's funeral. Tom only told Wilson that Gatsby killed Myrtle becouse he didn't want Gastby to take daisy from him. I agree With Michelle saying that Tom is a hypocrite because he too was cheating. I also agree with Alina saying that Tom probably forced Daisy to leave so he could have more control over her.

Yes, i do feel that Tom and Daisy are careless people. For example in chapter 2, Tom flaunts the fact that he is cheating on Daisy, he is very careless about who knows and he doesnt really care about Daisy's feelings at all, as long as he is happy he doesnt care. Also in chapter 7, Daisy kills myrtle and she allows Gatcby to take the blame for it and to me, it seems as though she was careless by killing her and was allowing Gatsby to clean up her mess for her. I agree with Larry, when he says "Just up and moving away was not a carefully thought out decision it is spur of the moment careless." I do feel the same, it was very careless to pack your bags and leave with all of the situations going on at that time. They didnt care about anyone else's feelings they just didnt want to be around all the chaos

I do Agree with Nick when he states Tom and Daisy are "careless people". They are very care free of others feelings. An example of this as Misty said is when we found out Tom has another girl besides Daisy, by a phone call he gets during dinner. He is also very careless because when we first meet Myrtle in the book, he slaps her around like she is a rag doll, breaking her nose by striking her and not caring that he did.
Daisy is also very careless, she only shows this a little in the begining, and that's when she just "ignores" the fact that Tom has a mistress. Daisy is also careless by having her own affair with Gatsby, I believe she was in it for his money, not only because she accused him for killing Myrtle, she did not even care enough to go to his funeral. She is very careless for killing Myrtle, she didnt care that it would hurt Myrtles husband, or Tom, but she got her pleasure out of it. She also must not care enough about Gatsby to go to his funeral, proving she did not want love from him but fortune.
Both of these characters are very unconsiderate of anyother persons feelings, even their own spouse. They got up and left in the middle of all the "drama" they caused.

I do believe that Tom and Daisy are indeed a careless couple. Daisy exhibits her reckless behavior during the incident with the car accident that killed Tom's mistress Myrtle, she did not think of what would happen to Gatsby when he takes the blame for her actions. All she thought about was herself. Tom exhibits similar reckless behavior when it comes to his mistress. For instance, on page 19, Tom openly answers the phone when his mistress calls and completely disregards the others around him, not caring if anyone knows he's having an affair or not. He even goes as far as to open hand slap his mistress, breaking her nose, but he didn't consider the possibility that her husband would be curious of her injuries, all he cared about was that she had been put in her place. I do agree with Alina when she stated that both Tom and Daisy did not even consider each others feelings when they decided to have affairs. Tom and Daisy are possibly the most reckless and uncaring couple I have ever read about.

Tom and Daisy were both careless individuals in the novel. Daisy was careless when she married Tom knowing she was still in love with Gatsby. On the day of the wedding she did not want to take anything from Tom "take'em downstairs and give'em back"(81). She took the pearl necklace anyway and she married Tom. She got drunk so that she could forget about her situation but that just caused more problems. I agree with Larry Lantz when he said Tom was careless when he left the dinner table to talk to the woman he was having an affair with. He could have been more respectful and waited. He stopped what he was doing and made it obvious that he did not care. The couple was careless together when they moved away and did not tell anyone where they were going. When Gatsby was killed Daisy did not (send) a message or a flower" to show that she cared (183). Later we found out Tom blamed Myrtle getting killed all on Gatsby. Tom did not know that it was all Daisy's fault he fel "(Gatsby) ran over Myrtle like you'd run over a dog"(187). Daisy never took the blame for killing Myrtle instead she let Gatsby tke the blame and he ended up losing his life. The only reason Daisy was with Tom in the first place was because he had money. She was suppose to wait for Gatsby while he was at war but instead she meet Tom and married him right away. Her parents approved of Tom. The careless couple was responsible for both Myrtle and Gatsby's death. Daisy never knew that Tom was so upset because Myrtle was the woman he was having an affair with. The two did not try to straighten things out instead they left and started new because they felt that money could fix everything.

I wouldn’t use the word careless to describe the path Tom and Daisy took. The behavior they exhibited is that of an injured animal- fighting and essentially self-destructing as a last-minute defensive strategy. The carelessness lies in the way they deal with their problems, or rather, attempt to cover them up.
Both were involved in affairs and though they didn’t really acknowledge it to each other, it seems as they were trying to make it obvious. Like Misty K said, Tom (though I believe Daisy is guilty of the same thing) “is flaunting the fact that he is cheating on Daisy.”
However, in chapter seven, when Tom is faced with complications, he reacts negatively, and as Nick recounts, “...as we drove away Tom was feeling the hot whips of panic. His wife and his mistress, until an hour ago secure and inviolate, were slipping precipitately from his control.” This makes me believe that Tom is a bit of a sociopath. He is not concerned about Daisy or Myrtle, only what may happen to him as a consequence of them finding out about one another. I think the fact that Daisy chose to be in the same car as Gatsby on the way to New York- making her preference blatantly obvious -was a way of upsetting Tom rather than for Gatsby’s benefit.
In summary, I think that Tom and Daisy are so hurt by each other and so unhappy with themselves that they try to retaliate against each other and everyone around them, in their own defense. The feud between the two is what ruined them, though I still believe they have feelings for each other, without a doubt, as Daisy admits to being in love with Tom when she is questioned.

I agree that Tom and Daisy can be considered as extremely careless people. I agree with Meghan, due to the fact that Daisy was obviously still in love with Gatsby when she married Tom. It must take a lot of carelessness to marry someone, when you are still love someone else. To add, when Gatsby told the story of the hit and run to Nick, he explained that Daisy refused to stop when she accidently hit Myrtle. It is just so disrespectful and careless to take someone's life and then let SOMEONE ELSE take the wrap for it. Not to mention, when Nick, Tom, Daisy, and Jordan went to New York, Daisy bluntly announced that she would ride with Gatsby instead of her husband Tom, knowing that she still loves another man. As for Tom, he is just as careless as well. When sitting just feet away from his wife, he decides to answer the call from his mistress, disregarding Daisy's feelings completely, as if she wouldn't care. Also, He travels along with his wife's FAMILY to New York to meet the woman who he is cheating on Daisy with, which is pretty careless if you ask me. Lastly, once Gatsby has been killed, Daisy is informed, but doesn't even come to the funeral in which he dies for her mistake, along with Tom who doesn't have anything to say about the situation accept that he told Wilson who "killed Myrtle." But, to sum things up, both Daisy and Tom are exceedingly careless and do not even consider their own spouse's feelings, and never stop to even think about each other.

I do agree that Tom and Daisy are careless people. Throughout the whole book, this couple demonstrates how poor one can do in a situation. The most popular example that is recognized is how Tom handles the problem with Myrtle calling his house. He didn't care to excuse himself or to take the call later. That's complete disrespect to Daisy but she doesn't care; she follows him anyway.
Also, Tom takes Nick with him to go see Myrtle, which is a poor decision. Nick is Daisy's cousin and he could tell her about this woman but he doesn't. Then Tom also hits Myrtle, which is a massive no-no, since she spoke of Daisy. Tom isn't a good man at all and he doesn't think out his actions.
Daisy isn't an angel herself. She also starts seeing Gatsby behind Tom's back, showing infidelity like Tom. Later on, she smashes her car into Myrtle's and it kills Myrtle. Both her and Tom show their sympathy in the crudest way--eating chicken and talking about their own problems as if the car crash did not happen. A nice way to give their condolences right ?
Then at last to really prove that these two are careless people is when they hear about Gatsby's death--they disappear. Gatsby died because of Daisy for taking the blame of who killed Myrtle. That was sweet of him but Daisy didn't respect at all by just leaving with her husband. Tom didn't care for Gatsby of course but he didn't show remorse for Myrtle dying like her husband did.
They are the perfect example of what not to do or how to act.

  22. Tom and daisy have to be considered "Careless People". Tom never even pondered whether or not to disguised his Adultery affair with Myrtle. since they had a amount of money that was insurmountable to any Fallacious actions, they went around with a arrogant and Holier-than-thou attitude. They used this bountiful currency and Links toward people to escape there mistakes after the crash that ended killing Gatsby and Myrtle. Tom threw it over-the-top when he became enraged upon hearing of Daisy and Gatsby's Affair even when he had one for some long time.

TOM AND DAISY ARE CONSIDERED "CARELESS PEOPLE" BY THEIR ACTIONS OF DOING WHAT THEY WANT WHEN THEY PLEASE NOT CONSIDERING ANYONE ELSE FEELINGS. BELIEVING THEIR WEALTH CAN HELP THEM ESCAPE ANY PROBLEM THAT COMES ACROSS THEM AND LOOKING DOWN ON OTHERS LESS FORTUNATE THAN THEM. BY THEIR ACTIONS OF RUNNING AWAY WHEN MYRTLE IS KILLED, OR HOW TOM FLAUNTS HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH MYRTLE NOT CARING WHAT DAISY MAY FEEL, AND HOW DAISY GOES OFF WITH GATSBY EVEN THOUGH SHE IS MARRIED SHOWS HOW IRRESPONSIBLE TOM AND DAISY ARE. NOT TO METION HOW THEY DIDNT EVEN ATTEND GATSBY FUNERAL SHOWS THEY ARE "CARELESS PEOPLE"!

I would definitely agree in saying that Tom and Daisy are careless people. They dont think anything through, they simply act on instinct. They don't bother to stop and consider the consequences that their actions could have on the other characters. From the very beginning of the book you can see examples of Tom and Daisy's reckless behaviors. At the beginning of the book Tom gets up from dinner to answer a phone call from his mistress. Shortly after, Daisy chose to ride in the car with Gatsby. These were both good examples of their carelessness. Then later on towards the end of the book Daisy hits Myrtle with the car, killing her, and goes on to let Gatsby pay for it with his life. Then they leave and don't even bother to attend Gatsby's funeral. From any angle you look at it, Tom and Daisy are outstandingly careless people.

I agree with the statement that Tom and Daisy are portrayed as careless people in The Great Gatsby. This is seen all throughout the story in every chapter. I agree with Alexis in saying that they do not think about their actions, they simply act with themselves in thought and not the impact it has on those around them. For example when Tom receives a phone call, he doesn't care to excuse himself or take the call at a later time. He makes it very obvious to those around him that he is having an affair and does nothing to really hide the fact that he is. I also agree with the statement Jonah stated, that "not only do they not care about each other but they don't even care about the ones they are cheating with." When they don't even care to show up to Mr. Gatsby's funeral they are clearly only thinking of themselves even though his death was a result of their actions. Thus showing their carelessness as individuals as well as a couple.

  26. I would have to agree that Tom and Daisy are extremely careless people. I also say this for many reason. for instance daisy elaborated to nick on how it was very obvious that tom had many women he had scattered everywhere. i say this is careless because if you are to cheat normally people try to hide it but not Tom. Daisy is also a careless person. i state because Daisy seemed to have relations with Gatsby and she did not care that anyone knew. but once Gatsby died Daisy made it seem like he was nothing, like she did not even care that he existed.

i completely agree with the statement that tom and daisy are a careless couple. they do what they want when they want without a thought. Like mykelti and alexis stated they really dont think how it affects the people around them. when tom gets his phone call he pretty much just let everyone know that he was having an affair simply because he didnt excuse himself from the table. in chapter 7 daisy hits myrtle with gatsby's car leaving him to take the blame and clean up her careless mess. they are perfect match simply for the fact they are selfish together and only care about their own happiness.

  28. I agree with Vanessa's opinion on Tom and Daisy being considered a careless couple. Tom in particular because he showed little discretion or caution in his affair with Myrtile. He actually took pride in the event and took Nick to accompany him to meet her. Not only that but it would as though he spoke to his mistress on several occasions while his wife and guests occupied other rooms in the house.
Daisy could be acknowledged as careless simply because her affair with Gatsby in my personal opnion was a give-and-take relationship. I honestly believe that Gatsby loved Daisy for the most part. Daisy on the other hand was pursuing joy and happiness at anyone's expense. She did not feel satisfied in the relationship so the obsession Gatsby had for her, could have simply been something to occupy the moment for her. She led him on for example, the night she wanted Gatsby to wait outside for her and she never signaled for him to leave or tried to communicate in anyway that no problems were taking place. Or the fact that she did not show for Gatsby's funeral or even call Nick to indulge in a conversation concerning his well-being.

I believe Tom and Daisy are careless people for many reasons in the story. My main reason they are careless is that they care only about themselves and not about anybody else. For example, we all know Gatsby and Daisy had history before he got all rich from bootlegging, yet she didn't even show up for his funeral at the end, neither did Tom who had known Gatsby for a while as well. Another example that Tom is careless is when he beat Myrtle publicly. This made him careless because he didn't even stop to consider what the people around him would've thought, or what Mrytle would've thought. Another reason, is how Tom "always had a girl with him." People who "cheat" usually are careful about that being known except Tom on the other hand could care less about who knew.

I do believe that tom and daisy were a very careless couple. The reason I think this is because first of all Tom got up while at dinner with not just his wife, but also his his wife's cousin and friend to talk on the phone with his mistress.. This is just one point, another being that Daisy let Jay fall all over her and when he died did not even attend his funeral. This are just some of the main points I think of when I think of how careless of a couple they are.

I agree that Tom and Daisy are a careless couple. They don't take into account other peoples feelings. They also don't regard each others feelings.I believe they don't take into regard each others feelings by when we find out that Tom has a mistress and Daisy knows about it I believe upon finding this out that Tom really doesn't care what Daisy thinks. I also believe that Daisy doesn't take into regard Tom's feelings when she hangs out with Gatsby. I do believe that she knows it hurts Tom when her and Gatsby hang out but I feel she just doesn't care. I agree with April when she states "They have little regard for others feeling." I would have to agree that both Tom and Daisy are some very careless people due to the fact they have no true meaning for the value of money or peoples feelings. Both Tom and Daisy live a fast paces life style where they can do anything and everything just because they have money. They blow money on things that arent practical (i.e) a hotel room for an hour long party and an enormous mansion for just the two of them. This life style they live is a dangerous one where there is no thought or care for the repercautions of their actions. They cheat and kill without a trace lf guilt. A perfect example of this is Daisy hitting Myrtal and not even stoping to see if she was ok. By saying this i would have to say i agree with Kayla Y. and and Jasmine P.

Tom and Daisy are a careless couple in that, like several others stated, they live a very frivolous lifestyle. They spend their money without a second thought on very impractical things such as an over-sized mansion. Likewise, Tom holds an affair with another woman (Myrtle) behind Daisy's back, with no care for her emotions despite the fact that others are aware of it (such as Nick and Jordan), with almost no attempt to conceal his infidelity. Similarly, Daisy seems to try to steal Nick away from Tom in that she doesn't seem to enjoy the two hanging out. Effectively, as others stated, they not only live very frivolous lifestyles but are very apathetic towards the emotions/feelings of others.
